As moms, we know how quickly life can derail even the most carefully planned schedule.
One moment, everything is under control.
The next, you’re juggling a sick kid, an endless meeting, or a household malfunction.
These moments can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategies, you can handle these curveballs without pulling your hair out.
So how do you do that?
With these five simple steps.
Acknowledge That Life Happens
The first step is to accept that life doesn’t always go as planned.
Give yourself grace and remind yourself that challenges are normal and apart of life.
For example, when my schedule recently got derailed by a string on the blinds breaking during dinner prep, I had to laugh and accept that it wasn’t something I could fix right then.
Instead of beating yourself up for not being able to handle everything perfectly, pause and acknowledge what’s happening.
Whether it’s a sick child, a traffic jam, or a sudden work emergency, take a deep breath and focus on what you can control.
Reprioritize Your To-Do List
When your day gets thrown off track, it’s important to reassess your priorities.
What absolutely needs to get done today and what can wait?
For example, during my dinner mishap, my husband reminded me to focus on finishing getting dinner ready instead of worrying about the blinds.
That simple shift in focus helped me stay on track.
If you struggle with prioritization, check out Episode 237.
Stay Flexible with Your Routines
Routines are a lifesaver for managing busy days, but they need to be flexible.
Sometimes, you won’t be able to stick to your usual routine. And that’s okay.
Think of routines as a framework, not a rigid set of rules.
When life happens, adjust as needed.
For instance, if your morning routine gets interrupted, focus on completing just the most critical parts, like getting the kids ready for school or preparing for an important meeting.
Lean Into Systems
Having systems in place can make it easier to navigate unexpected challenges.
For me, Trello is a game-changer.
I use it to track tasks, manage routines, and keep everything organized at work and at home.
Trello boards help me stay focused so that I don’t overlook important tasks, even when my day feels chaotic.
If you’re not already using a tool like this, I highly recommend trying it out.
Shift Your Mindset to Progress Over Perfection
Finally, remind yourself that setbacks don’t define your success or who you are.
It’s not about having a perfect day—it’s about making progress.
If your schedule gets thrown off, focus on the wins, no matter how small.
Did you handle an unexpected challenge with grace? That’s a win.
Did you check off one priority task despite the chaos? Celebrate that progress.
Remember, you can still have an awesome day or week, even when things don’t go as planned.
Life will always throw unexpected challenges your way, but with the right mindset and tools, you can handle them without feeling overwhelmed.
Remember to give yourself grace, reprioritize as needed, and focus on progress over perfection.
