Today, let’s chat about something we all face—clutter. And no, I’m not talking about the toys scattered around the playroom or papers on your desk.
I stumbled upon a different kind of clutter—mental clutter.
As busy moms, our minds get filled with thoughts, worries, and a million things, making it hard to concentrate and stay calm.
Understanding Mental Clutter:
Mental clutter is like having too many thoughts racing around in your head, making it tough to focus.
It can show up as constant worrying, going over the same thoughts again and again, or overthinking situations.
As moms, our minds are always buzzing with ideas, to-do lists, and plans, adding up to mental clutter.
My Story of Mental Clutter:
Lately, with changes at work and planning my first virtual summit, my mind has been on overdrive. I’ve noticed that when I get overwhelmed, I start saying random things that don’t make sense.
My husband jokingly asks, “Do you need a Snickers?”—a cue for me to take a break. Just like those Snickers commercials, it’s a reminder to reset when life gets too hectic.
Causes of Mental Clutter:
For busy working moms, multitasking is a major culprit. Switching between tasks can clutter our minds.
Also, our smartphones and computers constantly bombard us with emails, notifications, and information, contributing to mental mess.
Plus, the emotional rollercoaster at home after a hard day’s work adds stress and anxiety, further cluttering our minds.
Ways to Clear Mental Clutter:
- Daily Prioritization: Set a timer, brain dump everything on paper, organize tasks, prioritize, and schedule them. Plan some ketchup days for unexpected events.
- Journaling: Write out your thoughts and feelings to clear mental space. It’s free, easy, and has proven mental health benefits.
- Delegate the Load: Moms don’t have to do it all. Share responsibilities at home and work. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.
- Clear Physical Space: Organize your surroundings to reduce distractions. A clutter-free physical space can help clear mental clutter.
- Leave Room for Margin: Avoid overloading your schedule. Create breathing room for rest, relaxation, and unexpected moments.
