I am super pumped today to have a returning guests. That is Katie Carlo. She is back again to share with us how we can have the success without the hustle. And Katie is one of my favorite prayer people to talk to hence why this is the fourth time she’s been on the Real Happy Mom podcast. And today I know you are gonna love this episode, especially when it comes to this whole mompreneur series that we are doing to because in this episode, Katie goes ahead and shares with us how we can start to get clear on what our definition of successes, she gives us some questions that we can exercise, so that we can begin to get clear, and have a really clear vision of what success looks like and feels like for us. She also touches on how we definitely need to stop trying to do everything and get some help. And then also how we can take some time to check in and step back so that we can reflect because let’s just be honest, like we got a lot going on. And sometimes we just need to take a minute to just press pause. And really just check in. And lastly, Kenny goes over some of the other ways that we can be more conscious about having success without that. So by getting clear on our vision, getting confidence, and building self awareness, and also checking in on what’s going on in our environment. And then lastly, she talks about how we get to include that self care in there. And I know this is a message that we have talked about over and over again on the podcast. But like Katie says In this episode, you’ll hear and say like, yeah, it’s something we talked about, but are we actually doing it so she’s gonna give us some things here in this episode to really help us when it comes to this whole mompreneur life, and just mom life in general so that we can really begin to have the success that we have dreamt up without that. So let’s go ahead and jump on in to this week’s episode. All right, Katie is back again. Thank you, Katie, for coming on. I’m so happy to have you.
Katie 2:43
I’m so excited to be here. I love joining you for these conversations.
Real Happy Mom 2:46
Yes, yes. Like I was just thinking I’m like Kenny’s kind of like an unofficial co host. So the Real Happy Mom podcast that we’ve done together. So yeah, I’ll put it in the show notes. The other episodes that Katie was on it was three other episodes that we’ve done together. And this is the fourth one. So I’m super pumped to have you back. Katie, in particular, about this particular topic that we’re going to be touching on today. But before we jump into that really quick, if there’s anyone that’s listening this like, I don’t know who this Katie is, tell us a little bit about you and what you do.
Katie 3:19
Yeah, well, thanks again for having me. So yeah, if you haven’t listened to the other episodes, I am Katie Cabo. I am a life coach for mom entrepreneurs, and I help you find your success without the hustle like you said, that’s exactly what we’re going to be talking about today. So I’m very excited. I have two little kids I have a five year old and a one and a half year old. And you know, I’m full time mom, part time teacher at this point with COVID going on and then I’m learning to work kind of in the cracks in my day. So yeah, I know all about this finding your success without the hassle and ensuring that I don’t get caught up in that and you know, burn myself out because to me, that’s not success.
Real Happy Mom 4:04
Yeah. And it’s funny because when we proposed this topic in particular, I just sat down and was kind of like thinking about things like I honestly like right now Katie, I’m in this point right now where I just have a lot going on, like I’ve taken on a new position with the Navy and there was a lot of plans I had for Real Happy Mom. And I remember having a conversation with my husband and was like listen like I had all these things I wouldn’t do for with Real Happy Mom but I just can’t because like so much of my time is being consumed with the Navy and then I have a you know, a full time civilian job too. So I’m like either I do those plans I had for Real Happy Mom and hustle like crazy or I’m gonna you know or not or and in, in conjunction with that I will end up up you know, taking away a lot of family time or I can, you know, kind of streamline things do what I’m doing now. And then, you know, once I get out of this position, which is in two years, God helped me I can pick up those plans that I had for Real Happy Mom. And he just looked at me, he’s like, Well, you know what to do. And I was just like, yeah, like, I know, I could like hustle it out. But like he said, like, I know, I get burnt out, too. So I just wanted to hear what you had to say about this, this hustle, or success without the hustle, rather, that we can have. Because I think a lot of times we think, oh, in order to be successful, like we got to get, you know, you have to work all the time and have to do all the things, but you can still have success without the hustle. And I’m starting to feel that now. Like, okay, like, I’m at the point where I wanted to be like, a year or two ago, like, I’m actually successful in my eyes, you know, there’s still a lot I have to accomplish, but we can definitely have the things that we want in our definition of success without, you know, you know, burning the midnight oil every night, doing all those things. So talk to us about this, Katie?
Katie 5:57
Yeah, yeah. And I love that you have that conversation and thought about it that way. Because, you know, that’s really what it is, it’s about getting really clear, and really redefining and a lot of ways what success means, because for each individual, success is different. And we don’t usually think about it that way. We look at success as this, oh, I’m making the money. And I have this nice house and the fancy car. And everything, you know, is my Instagram perfect life. Whereas that’s not what everybody wants. And oftentimes, you know, success isn’t isn’t financially based at all. Because really, when it comes down to it, it’s not about the finances, it’s about what those that money is going to get you. It’s about what you can purchase with that, what experiences you can have through that income. Right? So it’s about getting really, really clear on what does success actually means you like, when would you be really happy and like living that dream life and, you know, energetic and joyful and completely satisfied with your life? You know, and I think a lot of people don’t, don’t really think about it, they don’t take that pause and think well, what am I striving for? And what kind of lifestyle do I want to live? And like you just said, like, you know, you can have this or this or that. And you can you can do all those things. But when you have that really clear vision of what you’re striving for, and the lifestyle that you want, making those decisions is a lot easier.
Real Happy Mom 7:28
Yeah, and I was gonna say something to Katie, that a lot of times I know like for us moms in particular. I don’t know, I just feel like it’s different for us, like innately we have something different about us that we cater to everyone else before we take care of ourselves. And so it’s hard a lot of times for us to have what we define as success, because we feel like we can’t have it all. And I’ve just learned, at least for me, like, I can’t have it all. It’s sometimes like I have to make sacrifices, or I have to wait on certain things. Like I can have it all, but not all at one time. And then I love how you’re you’re saying to you know, really define what success is to you. Because like I was just saying earlier, like, like I was thinking right? Like, I am, like feeling pretty successful. But I think a lot of times too, like, we get caught up in what other people are doing. And I know you can talk to me about this one, we get so caught up in what she’s doing and what they’re doing over there that we forget to really check ourselves and, and really see like how much progress we’ve made or all the things that we’ve done because I was listened to this one particular I think it was a sermon one day on the way home. And he was just saying how like, a lot of times you get so stuck on like, you know, striving for all these things and having, you know, this type of life and lifestyle. But if you think about like where you were, you know, I don’t know, three years ago, 10 years ago, in think about, like what you are wanting then is probably exactly what you have right now. And, and I got to thinking about it too. Like I remember when I was in dental school, I wanted I actually wanted quite a few things. I made a vision board. And on that vision board, I put a house, a stick figure with four people on there. So it’s mom, dad and two kids. And then I put a BMW and something else on there. And literally at that moment, when I started thinking about it, I’m like, Oh my god, like I have everything that I wanted on that vision board. I have my little family of four, I have all those things I dreamed of. And so I think a lot of times like stop looking outward, but like an end to and I love how you said to you know really define what success is for yourself because it’s so easy to get caught up in what other people’s definition is.
Katie 9:39
Absolutely, yeah. And it’s funny that you say that. I think we talked about that on the last episode, actually. So it’s great to bring that back up again. Because Yeah, oftentimes, we’re living like what our version of success was before and they’re our version of success can change and it will change depending on what stage of life you’re at and where you are in your life. Like My version of success last year before COVID started was very different than my current version of success. Right? So it’s okay to switch it up. And it’s okay to, you know, a lot of people hesitate to have that commitment towards like, well, what if I don’t want this in six months are you hearing well, then just change it, you’re in control of it. And that’s totally fine. And I love something else that you said earlier was learning that you can have it all. And I 100% think that you can have it all, I think that we can have it all, we can’t do it all. And that is where the really big important part of that comes in, because you can’t do it all. You’re only one person. And when it comes down to wanting to do all the things, you have to figure out what what do you actually want to be doing? And what can somebody else be doing and start delegating, and asking for help accepting help, because people offer to help quite a bit. And we have struggles to accept, accept that and say, yes. So I do think that you can have it all, but you can’t do it all. And yeah,
Real Happy Mom 11:04
definitely. And that’s a huge lesson I learned in 2020. I got to delegate and ask for help. And even now, like, I just know, like, okay, Tony, like you’re trying to do too much, I have to tell myself all the time, you’re doing too much Calm down, like who can get to help you with this. But one of the other things I wanted you to touch on, in particularly when it comes to the success without the hustle is, you know, how can we do better, like, if we catch ourselves kind of going a little too hard on our goals, like for me, I will tell you, like, I will stay up, you know, and have like four hours of sleep. And you know, it’s been like hours and hours working on projects and things like that. But how can we get a little bit more balanced with that? Because I know that that is one thing that a lot of people struggle with not just mounds where people just in general?
Katie 11:59
Yeah, that’s a great question. And, you know, I think it comes back again to this, the very first thing I do with my clients is get really clear on what that version of success is, what is your vision, I love that you said that you made a vision board, because especially for someone like me, who’s very visual, I love making vision boards and having it there in front of me on my desk or on the background of my phone or you know, wherever it is that you’re spending a lot of time. Because when you do get caught up in those things, and you’re feeling like, Oh, I don’t know if this is the right choice? Or should I be staying up late? Should I be getting more sleep? Like how, really, how should I be spending my time? Am I making the right choices? When those questions start to come in, you need to pause and just do that check in. And, you know, take that step back and reflect Okay, what is my vision? Is what I’m doing right now aligning with that vision? Or is it not and what maybe some things aren’t, and some things aren’t. And that’s when you can make those decisions, and make those shifts so that you’re not gonna burn yourself out. And so that you can stay aligned with that vision. And you can keep moving forward to that vision. I mean, saying that there are certain times when you might be hustling, I’ll say, and, you know, for a day or two or a week or, you know, certain circumstances come up. But in order to succeed long term in order to make it consistent and sustainable. You can’t be hustling all the time. It’s just not possible. So again, getting really, really clear on what is that vision and having regular check ins. So you know, if you’re in, you know, especially during COVID, I should say, checking in on like a weekly basis, how are things going? What’s going well, what’s not going well? And is this aligned with my vision? And maybe you need to reevaluate what your vision in that version of success looks like for you. That’s fine, too. But just checking in on a regular basis will help make sure that you’re not getting too far off track.
Real Happy Mom 14:03
Yeah, definitely. And I was just thinking about that, because you had given me this advice before. And I’ve gotten a lot better I was oh you Katie, with I’m checking in with myself and being like, okay, like what’s going on? How are you feeling? Because a lot of times when I am starting to get to that point where I’m like getting burned out, I will like feel it like deep like in my chest. I was like What is going on? And I have to really like, look around and reflect Okay, like what’s going on this week, you know, who’s been coming at me with, you know, some difficult decisions or it’s something that work or whatever the case is, because a lot of times like, I feel like we’re like in that go, go go. We gotta you know, get all these things done. Like we don’t take a second to pause. So definitely taking some time to reflect is super, super helpful. And another thing too, that you’ve told me too before you know is in conjunction with the division here is getting really clear on things. Because I know a lot of times you will be like, okay, like, I hear what you’re saying about getting clear. But like, what does that mean? Like, I feel like a lot of times, especially like people who are like me who like need like step by step instruction, like if you tell me what to do, I will do it. And I will get it done. But if you give me like something vague, I’ll be like, I don’t know what that is and what that looks like. So it took me a long time to figure out like, what it means to like, check in with myself, but it’s really just those questions that you just gave us, Katie, because I was I think I was just making it too complicated. But really just getting clear, okay, on what’s really most important right now, because especially like it’s for mompreneurs. Because that’s what’s going on right now we’re doing our mompreneur series, is that we have this goal in this dream for like, what we want our businesses to look like, but how can you like to do that, but make it all work with our live? Like, I know, you said, you know, getting help. But I think also too, is like, you know, figuring out what’s really important, because I think a lot of times to Katie, we think that Oh yeah, we got to be on Instagram all the time, or we got to I don’t know, make the hottest new graphics, whatever it is. But those aren’t the things that are necessarily moving the needle to. And that’s what can get us into that whole hustle, hustle, because we got to do all of these things that aren’t really, you know, moving the needle for us. So, definitely wanted to hear what you had to say on that part.
Katie 16:32
Definitely, yeah, and I mean, this point, you know, with COVID, I’m, like I said at the beginning, I’m full time mom. So I only get Sorry about that. That’s my children, two hours a day to work. So, you know, I have to get really focused, and I have a very limited time to sit down and get the work done. So like you said, it has to focus on what is going to move me forward right now, sitting around on, you know, Facebook, and scrolling through, which is, you know, a habit most of us have, is not going to move me forward is not going to get me to where I need to go. So, you know, I actually have this new habit, where, at the end of my work shift, I write out my to do list for the next day. And I find it to be really, really helpful. Because I’m already in the zone, I’m already in work zone, I’m not in mom zone, which is where I’m at when I sit down to work. So it’s easy to make that list at the end of my day, so that when I do sit down the next day, I already have those steps, I already know exactly what I need to be doing. And I’m able to shift from mom brain to entrepreneur brain a lot faster. And I’m not, you know, wasting time thinking about what am I supposed to be doing? Well, I maybe did I finish that didn’t know, I already did it at the end of my shift. So I know exactly what I need to be doing. And you know, it’s just a small steps like that.
Real Happy Mom 17:54
Yeah, definitely. And another thing too, Katie, that I started practicing, too, was also writing a done list. Like What Did I get done today? Because I think a lot of times we’ll like beat ourselves up and be like, Oh, no, I only spent an hour and I didn’t get anything done. But when we look at like what we actually did in that hour, you be like, man, like I was killing it today. Another helpful thing that also kind of gets us motivated for the next day too, as well.
Katie 18:21
Absolutely. And that’s definitely something that I talk about with my clients. Because we focus so much and we beat ourselves up so much on this. All the things we don’t get done. And the reality is our to do list is always there. And it’s always growing. So if you can, like you said, focus on what did you get done? Because so often the end of the day, we think, Oh my gosh, we didn’t like what did we do today? But you know, it’s really just like a gratitude practice at the same time, right? Like, Oh, I got all these things done. Look at look at how I spent my time actually I did a lot today, they might have been tiny things, but they you know, the compounding effect of them. When I was reading atomic habits right before I came on here, and he was talking about this. You know, it’s quite significant. I actually got a lot done today. It just might not have been directly from my to do list. But feeding the children is a very important thing to do.
Real Happy Mom 19:11
Yes, definitely gotta be a little people. But I really enjoy talking to you. And I love the insight that you get, cuz it’s always something something really, really small than like, Oh, yeah, if I do that, that will for sure help. So I know you gave us a cover really good tips. When being you know, getting clear on you know what our definition of success is, and really accent ourselves the questions on, you know, what does success actually mean to you? You know, what does it look like? What are you striving for those kinds of things? Because I know once we start asking ourselves questions, then it starts to make make it a lot easier for us to actually figure those things out. And then also, your mind is to get help. And then we don’t have to do it all by ourselves because I know that that is something that we all as moms, especially those super moms out there, I see you who are always feeling like, Oh, I can do it, I got it, I got it. But I’m really asking for help, and then taking a step back and reflecting on things, but I was just wondering if there was any other tidbits or tips or, or anything else that you would say, for as moms who are doing all the things as far as you know, we’re trying to, you know, get our business going and manage the house and the kids, like, what are some of the things that you would say, or encouragement you would give us, when it comes to be in a mompreneur and trying to get all these things done without the hassle?
Katie 20:41
You know, in terms of other things to do, I would say, looking at your habits is a big part of that. And, you know, habits and, and self care, and they can definitely go together. But we need to ensure that we’re taking care of ourselves, we need to start redefining what that means and redefining how we look at our self worth. And that we need to be taking care of ourselves, and doing kind of things for ourselves. So that we can continue on and do these things. Because especially like during these times, we have so much on our plate, and it’s just not sustainable. We’ve been in this for a year already. And a lot of us are starting to feel rundown and exhausted. And you know, I think it’s going to be another year. So it’s about taking a look at it and saying, What do I need to get through this time? And how can I make life at home and my work life, the way that I want it to be my best possible life in this time and this time that we’re living in? So looking at your habits, you know, something as simple as, are you drinking enough water? Like do you start your day off with a glass of water? That can make a significant difference in your day, when when you start doing it on a regular basis? Are you moving your body? And that doesn’t necessarily mean exercise? Although it can that can mean having a dance party every day? You know, any sort of movement? Are you getting outside and getting some fresh air? Like what do you need for your mental health to be in good working condition? And what do you need to ensure that your energy levels are sustainable, so that you can make it through the day without feeling exhausted all the time? Are you going to bed at a reasonable hour, you know, it’s these tiny little things that we’ve very often underestimate and overlook, that can really be the most powerful when they add up. And then when it comes to self care, you know, I define self care as doing something intentional, that makes you feel good. And that intentionality is really something that should be applied to all aspects of what we do. So, you know, if you’re, if your life is very full right now, and you feel like you’re gogogo, and you’re just trying to keep up, and you’re like self care, that’s not gonna happen. Because a lot of people I talked to you react that way, it’s really about realizing that self care doesn’t have to cost anything, that it doesn’t have to take really a lot of time at all. But it’s about being intentional, it’s about being present in the moment, and bringing your awareness to that. So something like like, hey, my kids are getting along, right now and I have five minutes of peace, I’m going to sit and really be present in this moment. And enjoy this moment. I you know, making a cup of coffee, and I’m gonna smell those beans and be present in that moment and enjoy, you know, each sip and taste that in my mouth. And, you know, be present in that moment, is really a major way of bringing in self care. It doesn’t necessarily mean going getting your nails done, your hair done and having bath. If that’s what you want to do. That’s wonderful. But I think a lot of people they kind of Fufu self care, because they’re like, Oh, well, that’s not me, or I don’t have time for that or the money for that. But self care can be whenever you want it to be as long as you’re being intentional about it. And it’s bringing you some joy in that moment. That’s really, really important. Yeah,
Real Happy Mom 24:20
yeah, yeah, I couldn’t agree with you more on on that definition for self care, because that was another thing I was running into, too, is like a lot of moms are like, yeah, like I don’t do the manicures and the bubble baths and stuff. And I’m like, but that’s not what it is that like that can be like something you could do, but that’s not entirely what it is. So I love how you broke it down to you know what it is that very simple level, but just really thinking about like some of the basic things that we often take for granted. Like you said, like drinking enough water getting outside moving our bodies going to sleep. You know, those are some of the basic basic things that we need to really function well, and if we don’t have those things, then yeah, it’s not good. But yeah, I’m glad that you brought that one up, because that is something that I know that we need to hear on a regular basis. That is messaged me for shortening to hear a lot.
Katie 25:15
Yeah. And I think that we, we do hear it a lot. But you have to check in what are you doing it? Because they Oh, we know we need to sleep. We know we need to drink water and move our bodies. But are you actually doing it right? It’s that check in take this moment when you’re listening to this to check in? Or what time did I go to bed last night? Did I get enough sleep? When was last time I had a drink of water? You know, and hit pause and go and do that right now.
Real Happy Mom 25:40
Please, yeah, please hit pause and do that. Because Yeah, we definitely want you to make sure you’re implementing it. And I think that’s the thing too, like you said, like we hear it, but we don’t always do it. So I’m glad you reminded us. So definitely hit pause and go get your water and set your alarm so that you you know, it’s time to go to bed. But yeah, Katie, I love this. And I love everything that you share with us today. So any other thing that you want to touch on before we signed up? Because I want to make sure that you gave us all the wonderful goodness that you always give us? if there was anything else on your mind or heart? We can definitely talk about that too. Yeah,
Katie 26:18
I mean, this is such a huge topic that I’m trying not to pick anything that we can dive fully into for the next half hour. But you know, I have this success module that I have just created. And I’ve taken each letter of the success and I’ve broken it down. And these are really the key things that I work with, with my clients. And I talked about with my community, and it seems to come up over and over again. And like we’ve talked about today, like, they’re all very simple things. They’re not complicated. They often don’t take a lot of time. But when we check in, we’re not often doing them, I think we take them for granted. And they just get overlooked. They feel like such a tiny thing that it’s like, well, it doesn’t really matter if I do that when the reality is when you take the time out to do them. And you put that effort into it, and you’re doing it on a regular basis, it makes a significant difference. I think it’s the difference between finding our success and not. So I’ll just go over them quickly. But like we’ve talked about, the first one would be getting super clear on that vision, what is your definition of success? What does your dream life look like? Then logging out? What are your habits. And sometimes we’re aware of them. And sometimes we’re not. So checking in with your habits, remembering to delegate, let go. cut ties wherever you need to oftentimes we’re doing things that we don’t need to be doing. And until we take time to, to look at what that successful version of our says and what we’re currently doing and spending our time doing. We don’t always realize all the things that we’re doing, and maybe we don’t actually need to be doing some of them. Then that confidence mindset and building that awareness, which you mentioned, that’s something you’ve been doing since we’ve talked and it’s amazing to hear, because building that self awareness can really be a massive Game Changer and can build your confidence and you’re going to find your success a lot faster. When you do that. Then we would talk about environmental freedom. And this is a very big topic. And this comes down to how you social media, the people that you surround yourself with, you know, what does your physical environment look like? How is your office space? You know, how is your home life, like taking a look at these things can really impact your day to day life, your business and your overall success. And then like we just talked about our self care and remembering to slow down in order to speed up, take that pause, check in with yourself. Try to be present in the moment, even if it’s just for like 60 seconds. And lastly, remember that you’re a superstar.
Real Happy Mom 29:10
Yes, I love that especially the last one.
Katie 29:15
That’s what we need. We have to just remember I think we you know we think of ourselves selves so much as mom we think for ourselves so much as wife and entrepreneur and we just like you said, forget to check in and see all the great things we’ve done and that were amazing. Like, we’re amazing that we’re getting through each day and we’re doing it not always like like I said before we hit record today wasn’t the best day but most days are doing great. Like you’re a superstar. You are incredible person. Your children are alive and well and your business is running like you’re just blowing life out of the water.
Real Happy Mom 29:53

Now, I hope you have enjoyed this episode with Katie. Again, like I said earlier, she is like one of my favorite people to talk to here on the podcast, because she always have something small and simple that we can start with and we can begin to actually start doing that’s really going to make a huge impact for us in the long term. So definitely take what she’s given us today in this episode, and really start to see where you can start to implement this in your life. Because one thing that I’ve learned with Katie is when I actually start doing things like, yeah, life gets better. So trust me, go ahead and pick out one thing today. Remember, she talked about quite a few things. So just to remind you, you can start to exercise some questions to actually get clear on what success looks like. You can start to delegate and get help. You can also start to do that to do lists for the next day at the end of the day while you’re still in the zone so that you already know what to do when it comes to the next day. And then lastly, we talked about habits, in particular with self care, because there is a lot going on. And if you’re not taking some time out for yourself, you can get burnt out pretty quick. So pick one of those things and start to implement it today. And I promise you, you will definitely see a difference here in the days and weeks to come. So make sure you stay tuned in for another episode. This is definitely been so much fun doing this mompreneur series, and I am so happy that you have joined me here. Definitely if you have not listened to all the episodes, go ahead and, you know, look back to those other episodes so that you can listen to the whole series that we have this week. It’s been so much fun. And I thank you to everyone who’s been listening all week long. This has been really, really fun. And I hope you found it helpful.
